Biochem/physiol Actions
GCP2 (granulocyte chemotactic protein 2) up-regulation in tumor cell allografts results in enhanced angiogenesis. It functions synergistically with MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein) chemokines to induce neutrophil mobilization and tumor angiogenesis. This protein is present in amniotic fluid, and this concentration decreases with advancing stages of gestation. Thus, it is thought to confer immune protection against invading microbes in the amniotic cavity. In diseased gingival tissues, it works in orchestration with IL-8 (interleukin 8), which is linked to the severity of periodontal disease. This protein is also involved in antibacterial activity during localized infection.
General description
GCP2 (granulocyte chemotactic protein 2) is a chemotactic chemokine and is expressed in mesenchymal cells and endothelial cells and fibroblasts showing angiogenic characteristics. It is a pro-inflammatory neutrophil chemoattractant. It is a member of the ELR+ (glutamic acid-leucine-arginine) CXC family, and shares the highest structural homology to IL-8 (interleukin 8).
