Background: MCAM/CD146
MCAM, also known as MUC18, is an Ig-superfamily glycoprotein that shows significant homology to several cell adhesion molecules, notably N-CAM. It was identified as an antigen on metastatic melanoma cells and is also expressed on a variety of normal and transformed cell types. MCAM expression is associated with tumor progression and metastasis, and may be involved in embryonic neuronal development.
